The growing importance of standardisation for the digital economy
Formal standardisation is becoming increasingly important for the digital economy, as new EU regulations such as the AI Act, the Cyber Resilience Act and the Data Act use harmonised European standards (hENs) as key regulatory instruments. While the digital industry has so far been primarily active in standardisation, it will need to be more involved in the creation of formal standards in the future in order to protect its interests and ensure practical feasibility. Standards are crucial for interoperability, security and competitiveness and play a key role in the digital transformation and strengthening Europe's digital sovereignty.
